I never really thought about adding animals to my novels. Yet, I indeed did just that. And, I’ve found they can be the best for adding a bit of humor, courage, and all-around fun. 📖✨

In my books, my animals don’t talk like they do in some stories, but they do make their intentions known. There are many ways to help your reader get to know the characters. Adding an animal companion is one of them. The animals can show us what kind of person the character is: loyal, kind, or the opposite: cold-hearted and mean. 🐶❤️🦁

Here are some tips for using animals effectively in your writing:
1. Character Reflection: Your animal companions can mirror the traits and personality of your main characters. A loyal dog might reflect the protagonist’s unwavering determination, while a mischievous cat could hint at a character’s cunning nature.
2. Conflict and Comedy: Animals can be a source of both conflict and humor in your story. Whether it’s a misbehaving parrot or a curious raccoon causing chaos, they add depth and entertainment to your plot.
3. Symbolism: Consider the symbolic meaning of certain animals and how they can enhance your story’s themes. A majestic eagle might symbolize freedom, while a wise old owl could represent wisdom and guidance.
4. Emotional Connection: Animals evoke strong emotions in readers. The bond between a character and their animal companion can tug at the heartstrings and create a powerful emotional connection.
5. Subtle Communication: While your animals may not talk, their actions and reactions can speak volumes. Use their body language, expressions, and behavior to convey their intentions and emotions.
